A three-act play, set in a seedy English boarding house by the sea. Stanley Webber, pampered by a maternal landlady, finds his comfortable life interrupted by the arrival of two sinister men, Goldberg and McCann, agents of a person or persons unknown, who ostensibly are looking for rooms. It becomes clear, however, that their mission is to intimidate Stanley. So successfully do they wield their mysterious authority, hurling questions and accusations at Stanley, that in the end they lead him, muted and broken, to a waiting car outside; but they, too, seem to be infected by the same fear and uncertainty they imposed on Stanley.
